when i was growing up deep in an African village in the early 70's, we were poor and my parents couldnt afford to buy books. then a miracle happened. i visited a family in the city who happened to have a bedtime story book by Uncle Arthur. i never forgot the stories and i promised myself that when i grew up i would buy the set and keep it for my chldren. i bought the books when i got married and enjoyed reading them so much. the kids then came and i enjoyed reading to them as much. My favourite story was the kid and the hollow pie. The books helped shape the way my kids grew up. Thank you so so much. i will soon be a grandma and the books are still around . cant wait to read to my grandchild.

I got a copy of the book used, recently. I love it as a reference. I don't think I can do the 1% challenge, though . . .

My Mom read these books to us when we were kids and I read them to my kids also. I really liked the stories. I especially liked the one called "The Two Carolynes", about a girl who was very sweet at school and horrid at home and how her mother solved the problem. These books teach kids good values. You can find these and many more books he wrote at http://www.uncle-arthurs.com/ua/browse_books.php

A friend of mine has the movie book. He says it's very handy. The titles are so oppressive, though: Books, movies, albums you MUST read/see/hear before you die! I'd be tempted to stop at #1000 in a cheap bid for immortality.

I'm pretty confident I've actually read all the ones I've marked, and I think there are some on the list I've read and haven't marked. As the years go by I have a hard time distinguishing between what I've actually done and what I've only intended to do. It comes in handy sometimes.

I have another volume in this series, 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, and have been meaning to blog about it for a year now. A seriously flawed book and yet one which has significantly enriched my life. I've wanted to pick up the novel and film volumes as well and perhaps now I shall.

I think going through and bolding the books on this list I've actually read would be mortifying. So of I course I now must.
