Here are some notes on recent events I have attended at WriterHouse. We are so fortunate to have many gifted writers in the community and the surrounding area who are willing to share their experiences with others.
- Unveiling Iranian Women Writers in America: This informal talk by Professor Farzaneh Milani of the University of Virginia could not have been more timely. Dr. Milani spoke at length about Iranian women writers, the roles of women in Islam and the ways in which Iranian and Muslim women are portrayed in Western literature.
- Getting Published in the Children’s and Young Adult Markets: Fran Cannon Slayton, author of When the Whistle Blows, read from her book and then gave the audience an inside view of the children’s/YA market.
- Getting Published: An Evening with Susan Gregg Gilmore: Yet another example of an author generously giving back to the writing community. Gilmore gave everyone present the benefit of her publishing success with Looking for Salvation at the Dairy Queen.
