WriterHouse: Nonfiction Now with Richard Sowienski

From my ever-burgeoning inbox:

WriterHouse is excited to announce that Richard Sowienski, managing editor of The Misssouri Review, named one of the top five literary magazines in the country, will be visiting Charlottesville and teaching a one-day seminar called Nonfiction Now.

In response to “flash fiction” comes “nonfiction now”—short personal essays that we’ll produce on-the-spot in this one-day workshop. We’ll delve into our earliest memories, explore subjects in which we are experts, and profile “characters” in our lives to get us on our way to writing creative nonfiction. In addition to our workshop-writing exercises, we’ll look at some of the tools that creative writers use, including sentence variety, scene, dialogue, exposition, and metaphor, Furthermore, we’ll review the hallmarks of the personal such as intimacy, reliability of the narrator, understanding and “deeper meaning.”

Participants will be asked to read short to medium-length essays before the workshop meets. Our goal is for each writer to end the day with two or three short gems ready for more polishing or for expansion to a longer essay.

Richard Sowienski serves as managing editor of The Misssouri Review, named one of the top five literary magazines in the country. He teaches writing and Internship in Publishing at the University of Missouri, and he has taught writing at Columbia College and Stephens College, both in Columbia, Missouri, and the University of Iowa. His journalistic and feature articles have appeared in Country America magazine, New Home magazine, and Better Homes and Gardens, where he also served as Parenting and Education Editor. He holds an MFA in nonfiction from the University of Iowa.
