Summertime, and the reading was … skimpy. Not really. I didn’t read many books this month, but the ones I did read were very rewarding.

The Master Bedroom: A Novel, Tessa Hadley, pub. 2008, F ****
- A quiet but gripping novel of a lonely woman who returns to her childhood home and causes lots of trouble. I had to stick with this one for a couple of chapters before Hadley’s skill began paying off.
The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power, Jeff Sharlet, pub. 2008, NF *****
- Sharlet was a gracious guest at BookBalloon for a Q&A. His book expands on some articles he did for Harper’s about The Family, a fundamentalist group whose tentacles wind all through our government.
To the Lighthouse, Virginia Woolf, pub. 1989, F *****
- This was our July Book Club discussion topic at BookBalloon. The discussion (which you can still find at the site; requires free registration) was invaluable in helping me understand this complex and rewarding novel.
