“Opportunities to read, write, schmooze” from the Hook’s Annual Manual:
Time flies when you’re having a good time, and most people in Charlottesville who love books would probably concede that they’re having a good time most of the time– especially in the spring when the Festival of the Book takes over the town….
Folks without the herding instinct can still satisfy their bookish urges around town. Barnes & Noble in Barracks Road, the New Dominion Bookshop on the Downtown Mall, the Quest Bookshop on Main Street (and even the new WriterHouse on Dale Avenue) offer chances to hear and schmooze with authors in more intimate settings.
In addition, there’s The Jefferson-Madison Library system, the University of Virginia, Piedmont Virginia Community College, the Charlottesville Writing Center, Live Arts, and writing competitions.

The Jefferson-Madison Regional Library doesn’t only have book but there are lots of book groups where people get together to discuss good reads. Check the Adult Programming website http://www.jmrl.org/pr-adults.htm for a listing of book groups at many of the branch libraries.
So true — thanks, Jackie! Some of the book groups are also on the CvilleWords Google calendar, which you can subscribe to by using the button at left.

Are the used bookstores, Daedalus and Heartwood, still around?
Still hanging in there, I believe. I haven’t been on Elliewood in a while, but I think Heartwood is still there.
