Rumors abound about the identity of the mysterious CHERCH Ladies, that triple-threat team of righteous women who will make their second annual appearance at Wordplay. For instance, here’s a snippet from the transcript of a recent interview with Wordplay sponsor Beth Golden, the executive director of Literacy Volunteers Charlottesville Albemarle, and game designer Debra Weiss. They were discussing the team rosters with interviewer Sean Tubbs of the Charlottesville Podcasting Network:
Debra Weiss: We have the CHERCH Ladies…they’re…I think they’re writers, aren’t they?
Beth Golden: I’m not sure who the CHERCH Ladies are, I always assumed they were affiliated with some type of clergy, but…
Weiss: …No, no, no…they’re writers…I think…
Golden: …I’m finding out that’s not the case.
So that clears that up. Will the CHERCH Lades take home “the big super-cheesy traveling trophy”? Heaven knows.

I know the CHERCH ladies. (Well, I know some of them. Probably no one knows all of them.) They’d like you to believe they’re righteous or writers or whatever, but the truth is far stranger than that. I’m not saying it’s a secret society or anything, but, well, you’re all better off not really knowing the whole truth.
WordPlay is only the first step in the CHERCH ladies’ plan for Total World Domination.
