Last Thursday I attended a reading by poet Sharon Leiter at the New Dominion Bookshop. She read from her new book, The Dream of Leaving, to an appreciative audience.
I particularly liked Leiter’s poems “Rockaway in the Himalayas,” and “Rockaway in the Virginias,” with their images of the Himalayas as “an erratic cardiogram” and the “dandelion-headed companions” of her parents’ retirement at Our Lady of Peace. Many of the poems dealt with aging, retreating, the (false hope of) the end of desire, the feeling of ripeness along with loss. And yet the poems were not, as a whole, sad — and sometimes they were quite funny.
