Today’s Talk of the Nation featured a very interesting interview with David Cordingly, author of a new biography of Thomas Cochrane, who was the model for Patrick O’Brian’s fictional sea captain, Jack Aubrey. The book is called Cochrane: The Real Master and Commander, and would be an excellent Christmas or birthday gift for a Patrick O’Brian fan like, say, me.

Oh, so going to get that. My son is named after Jack Aubrey. A late-comer to reading Master and Commander, I read the entire 20 complete novels while pregnant. How could I not name my son after one of the characters?
And what better character could he be named after? Excellent choice. But weren’t you just a little tempted to name him Stephen?
You’re lucky you got to read them all at once. I started reading them in the mid-90s, and had to wait slow years for the last few.
Ye,s I was tempted to name him Stephen. However, in that way that a mother knows without a shred of proof or evidence, Jack was his name. Stephen wouldn’t have fit.
Oh, god, I love those books. When I’m done with school, I might just settle in and read them again, beginning to end. Thanks for pointing this book out, I’ll have to read it.
Hi Kids,
I”m very hungry for other blogs and observations about the Aubrey books. My son by the way is named … Stephen. But he was born before I knew about Dr. Mauterin (sp?) Where else can I read insights about the series from amateurs?
Thanks
