Bloomington does it again

National Geographic Adventure Magazine names Bloomington, Indiana, one of the 50 Best Places to Live. And which Central Virginia university happenin’ town is not on this list? Is there no justice in this world? Did I bring bad mojo when I moved here? Is it the gangs? The security cameras?

Surely not.

  1. This IS a fabulous place to live, no doubt about it. That said, this is a very expensive place to live, which brings down the city’s rankings in surveys such as the one you cited. And, local salaries are definitely not commensurate with such high housing prices.

  2. I thought this one was particularly interesting.

    Lynchburg, Virginia
    - Population: 68,758
    - Median home price: $143,450
    - The radius: Though geographically mid-Atlantic, this former home of Thomas Jefferson issues pure southern charm. Lynchburg is surrounded by a hundred-mile (161-kilometer) swath of national forest, rivers, and recreational areas. Summit the nearby Peaks of Otter—Sharp Top, Flat Top, and Harkening Hill—for glimpses of the Blue Ridge Mountains, then hitch a ride along the Bedford Wine Trail, which hits five area vintners.

Since when did Lynchburg supplant Cville as the home of Thomas Jefferson? I smell the work of real estate redevelopers.

  3. Thomas Jefferson had a summer home, Poplar Forest, in Bedford, which is kinda sorta close to Lynchburg.

  4. Funny that they don’t say it’s the former home of Jerry Falwell.

  5. Well, as long as it’s only the *former* home…
