Bloomington, Ind. : A great place to live

Bloomington, Indiana, the hometown of my heart, hit the number one spot on Mother Earth’s 8 Great Places list.

Charlottesville, why aren’t you on this list?? You’re a great place to live for all our citizens! Or something like that.

  1. Charlottesville, why aren’t you on this list??

Look at the average Median House Value: $150,600.

That’s why Cville isn’t on the list. Only Bellingham Washington and Ukiah California have higher at 252,000 and 330,000 respectively. Which is very reasonable for those two states. After that it drops back down into the mid 100k’s.

Why pay that here in Cville (252k and 330) for condos and townhouses when you can get it on the west coast with the year round great weather?

  2. Very good point.

  3. Bloomington is wonderful. My late grandmother lived there for 25 years and we still have family friends there. Okay, so that’s boring to everyone else, but I love Bloomington.

  4. I was so homesick for Bloomington after we moved to Virginia. Moving to Charlottesville helped. Cville is a lot like Blmgtn, but smaller and a lot more upscale.

It’s funny, Bloomington even has its own Coran Capshaw (Bill Cook) and DMB (John Mellencamp). And of course it’s also a university town. Big difference in U’s, though: IU is much bigger, with more going on year-round, and a better basketball team. :) Also, I worked and earned a degree at IU, and I miss that university connection here.

Another strange thing to me is the constant tug of war between the city and the county here. I didn’t perceive that in Bloomington. The city there doesn’t have its own separate school system, for instance.

  5. Just back from Bloomington. Although I was staying in Brown County, I popped over to Bloomington several times, hit a couple of bookstores, had dinner with a friend at Upland Brewing. And then I ran into somebody at the grocery store in Staunton yesterday with an IU cap. You know there’s an IU Alumni Club in formation in C-ville?

  6. No, I didn’t know that. I’m tempted to join just to have somewhere to wear my IU t-shirts.
