This book has been out for some time — I think I read it last year — but this review just popped up in my inbox from Powell’s Books. I thought I’d pass it along because Misquoting Jesus is a very informative, thought-provoking, and readable account of how the New Testament came to take the form(s) that it has today.
Ehrman can be irritatingly repetitive, but he does has a clear, jargon-free style. One of the best parts of the book is the introduction, in which he tells how his own faith has evolved because of his studies.
And if Ehrman doesn’t convince you, you can always read Misquotes in Misquoting Jesus.

Ehrman is one of my favorite Bible scholars. Him and Cahill’s THE DESIRE OF EVERLASTING HILLS and toss in the works of Elaine Pagel and Karen Armstrong. It’s about reclaiming Jesus from the fundamentalists, brushing off the bullshit dogma and showing the enormously impressive and revolutionary message buried beneath…
I love Pagels and Armstrong. Highly recommended.
I wrote a novel about this very thing, Cliff. It’s called “Only Begotten”. I haven’t even tried to find a publisher. Maybe that’s a mistake.
I thought that novel was about cheeses
That’s the one. Many different kinds of cheeses.
Blasphemer.
It’s in the scripture! “Blessed are the cheesemakers…”
“Take along these ten cheeses to the commander of their unit. See how your brothers are and bring back some assurance from them.–1 Samuel 17:18
