Literary figure fights British litter
NORWICH, England, May 2 (UPI) — Transplanted U.S. writer Bill Bryson has taken a leadership position in the fight against litter in Britain. Bryson, the author of “Notes from a Small Island” who lives near Norwich, has been nominated for president of the Campaign to Protect Rural England, The (London) Daily Mail reported Wednesday. His appointment is expected to be approved July 9.
“One of the few things that really upsets me in this country is litter,” Bryson said. “It’s heartbreaking.”
Bryson says he has no idea how to run a national campaign.
“I have always just sounded off, but this time I am determined to change people’s behavior,” he said.
Since Bryson has made a career out of not knowing things and then going off to educate himself about them, I have every confidence he’ll run a terrific national campaign. Great Britain will soon be so clean you can eat off it.
Never read any Bill Bryson? Yipes! I highly recommend starting with A Walk in the Woods if you’re a local cat, or Notes From a Small Island if you’re in the mood for Anglophilic humor. In a Sunburned Country is also excellent and very funny.
