Journalist wears out shoe leather to get Sedaris story

UPDATE: This American Lie

To what lengths was Alex Heard willing to go to uncover David Sedaris’ nefarious lies? Behold this exchange on for those about to rock

In response to a January 25 entry titled games I really like (“…streets of rage 2, contra 1 and 3, guitar hero, resident evil 1, 2 and 4, god of war, mortal kombat 2, mega man 1 and 2, super metroid, phantasy star 2 and 3, shadowrun (snes and genesis versions), zeldas, super mario bros.s, rock n roll racing…”) , Alex Heard leaves the following comment:

I’m a journalist trying to find Tiffany Sedaris. I sent her an email through her Web site, but it appears to have bounced. I’m wondering if you have contact info for her or any way to let her know I’d like to speak with her. Thanks for your help. I saw mention on your blog of you running into her, so I thought you’d know where she is.

If you have any questions about what I’m doing, just call or write. I can send you the full text of the email I sent her, so she’ll know what this is about, but I’d rather not post that on the blog.

Hoping to interview her for an article I’m writing in the New Republic about David Sedaris and his family.

What the? Here’s the reply:

At 9:19 AM, jomilkman said… a — i wish i could help, but i’m not comfortable with the idea of approaching her, not when i’ve read that she’s an essentially private person who i sense would prefer to be known in the public realm for who she is rather than who she’s related to, and not when i wrote a blog entry about our encounter without her consent, even with that knowledge in mind.

that said, i do wish you the best of luck….

And then the gaming discussion resumes.

  1. in case it matters to anyone who wishes to assess alex heard’s general research m.o. by way of the question he posed on my blog, the entry he references in his comment may be found here:

i’ll admit that i was surprised to receive his inquiry in response to what i feel amounted to nothing more than a slice-of-life reflection on a chance encounter with a stranger whom i was in the unique position to have previously read something about in a book, whether or not one considers ‘me talk pretty one day’ to be the kind of autobiographical writing that strives as much as possible to adhere to the truth.

still, i’m not so sure that alex heard’s request necessarily indicates that he’s a desperate hack.

i guess your readers can take it for what it’s worth, at any rate.
