Here’s the deal with The Last King of Scotland: If you haven’t seen it yet, ignore the “based on a true story” hype. It’s baloney, and if you waste too much brain power trying to figure out which parts are true and which aren’t you’ll miss half the movie. Yes, Idi Amin’s reign of terror was so bizarre that almost anything could have happened, but the events surrounding the Scottish doctor at the center of the movie are not remotely plausible even in that context, so don’t worry about it. Just enjoy Forest Whitaker in one of the best performances of 2006. Go, go, enjoy!

I highly recommend the book on which the movie was based. I read it back when it came out in paper (apparently 1999) and thought it was very well written. I was happy to see that the movie was also well done (although I can’t remember enough detail about the book after 8 years to comment on how closely the movie followed the book. Anyway, read the book.
Books to read, movies to see, guess I’ll have to give up writing for a while…
