I thought the graphic novel was passing me by. I was a big consumer of comic books and comic strips of all kinds as a child, but I felt this new genre was for a different generation. I couldn’t escape the fanfare for Fun Home, however, and when I realized the author was Alison Bechdel of Dykes to Watch Out For fame, and that it was a memoir, I knew I was in for a new experience. Hyper-literate, funny, sad, gripping, suspenseful, touching, brutally honest — I’ve never read anything like it, and I read a lot of memoirs.
