Just finished The Patron Saint of Liars, by Ann Patchett. This was her first novel. Quite good; I really enjoyed it, despite her heavy hand with foreshadowing and theme (first clue that this was a “novel of redemption”: a central character named “Son”). I also thought I detected a hint of Mary Sue in the character of Rose. I kept flipping from the frequent descriptions of Rose as strikingly, heartstoppingly beautiful, to the large back cover photograph of the young and lovely Patchett. Hmmmm….
