New Year’s Resolutions

I don’t like to make New Year’s resolutions, or set goals of any kind, really — I’d rather put off until next year what I could plan to accomplish this year. But once again the temptation of a fresh new year is too strong, and I find myself resolving the following:

1. To be kind, for everyone I meet is fighting a hard battle . (I borrowed this saying from Plato. Or Philo of Alexandria. No one seems to be sure which. All I know is, I repeat it to myself a lot.)

2. To write more. Not better, or at greater length, or on a set schedule, or in service of some higher goal like getting something published. Just, write more. That’s a level of accomplishment I’m at least likely to meet.
